According to El Nacional (h/t Football.London), Chelsea are among the three clubs in the race to sign Bayer Leverkusen youngster Florian Wirtz who displayed elevated performance in the Bundesliga.
Florian Wirtz has been giving some electrifying performances lately for Bayer Leverkusen. The 18-year-old player currently stands second in the Bundesliga assist chart with six assists. Furthermore, he has shown attacking intent by scoring seven goals in 14 matches across all competition.
It seems that Chelsea has targeted the player who is believed to be ‘one of the next big things.’ The German player can provide greater depth to Thomas Tuchel’s side, and he could be a viable attacking option who can exploit spaces and play creatively.
The Blues face a difficult situation with Hakim Ziyech’s contract extension, and his lack of game time could initiate an exit pass in the coming windows. In such a case, Bayer Leverkusen youngster can become an excellent investment for the West London team for the future.
Chelsea’s forward line also faced an injury issue in recent times. Having lost Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner, the Blues manager has heavily depended on Kai Havertz- a player the Blues signed last year from Leverkusen itself- to take the centre forward role.
Wirtz could be a tremendous asset in assisting the team in such difficult times as he can play forwarding roles too. His attacking intent and hunger for goals would be an advantage in such a case.
But Chelsea wouldn’t have a free run in the pursuit of the starlet. Real Madrid and Barcelona – both the Spanish giants are interested in a possible move involving the player.
