According to Spanish TV show El Chiringuito de Jugones via Sport Witness (h/t The Mirror), Chelsea skipper Cesar Azpilicueta will stay at Stamford Bridge amidst interest from FC Barcelona after he had reached an agreement with the board.
Azpilicueta has a contract with the Blues, which will expire at the end of the 2021-22 season. He could walk away on a free ahead of next season and can even agree to a pre-contract agreement with other clubs.
Barcelona are interested in getting his services following the appointment of Xavi Hernandez as their new manager. It is understandable why they have an interest since the Spaniard would be a free transfer and would not affect them financially if he does leave without extending his deal at Stamford Bridge.
The 32-year-old has featured regularly under Thomas Tuchel this season and has shown no sign of any decline despite him being at the latter stages of his career. He has also earned three assists from the 13 matches he has played this term.
The defender has agreed to a contract extension with Marina Granovskaia, which will see him at the club till the 2022-23 season. Spanish journalist Eduardo Inda also mentioned that there is ‘no chance’ that he will leave the English club.
The centre-back was part of the Spain national team that recently booked their spot in the 2022 Qatar World Cup. He has also played a role in the Spanish squad’s emergence to the top in recent years.
Having led the West London club to the Champions League last year, he would be happy to stay looking at the circumstances. His contributions helped the club to have the best defence in Premier League with just four goals conceded in 11 matches.
As a club legend, we would want him to see him continue till the end of his playing career as he has contributed a lot during these years. His versatility to cover for Reece James down the right flank is also something to take note of, and he can continue being a valuable asset to the squad for at least a few more years.
