A number of rival stars questioned earlier this week as to why Chelsea ace Edouard Mendy was not nominated for the Ballon d’Or.
The 29-year-old raised the topic once again with a stellar man of the match performance against Brentford in the Premier League. Thomas Frank’s side was comfortable the better team on the night but could find no way past our Senegalese wall in goal.
Mendy continued to pull off one incredible save after another as Brentford threw the kitchen sink at the Chelsea goal. The Blues had taken the lead in the 45th minute thanks to the in-form Ben Chilwell. It was all they needed thanks to their incredible goalkeeper.
The Blues shot-stopper has now kept 20 clean sheets in just 38 top-flight appearances in England. Only Petr Cech (26), Pepe Reina (32), Alisson Becker(36) and Roy Carroll (37) achieved the tally in lower games.
Mendy’s heroics also ensured the Blues end the weekend at the top of the Premier League. Liverpool had earlier laid the gauntlet down with a 5-0 thrashing of Watford to go top. Chelsea have not responded in kind but have regained their summit thanks to their goalkeeper.
Mendy could very well prove to be the difference between us having a good season and a successful once. We now look at how some fans reacted to the 29-year-old’s performances.
