According to Betting Expert (h/t The Sun), former Chelsea star Glen Johnson had backed Romelu Lukaku to beat Cristiano Ronaldo for the golden boot this season.
The Belgian returned to the Bridge for big money earlier this summer. He has since scored four goals in eight games, a decent return. Lukaku, however, does have his forgettable moments, especially so when he is starved of service.
The same was on display in our last two games against Manchester City and Juventus. Lukaku struggled and will need to overcome similar obstacles in the games to come.
This has done little to deter Johnson who has backed the 28-year-old for glory. Johnson believes Lukaku will play more than Ronaldo, evening the odds against the prolific Portuguese ace.
“I’m going to go with Lukaku – just because of the game time.”
Johnson believes Chelsea are a side headed in the right direction. Lukaku is easily the club’s first-choice striker and will have no problems in getting playtime. An excellent finisher in the box, Lukaku has it in his locker to score bucketloads.
“The goal scoring opportunities they’re going to get weekly with Lukaku playing weekly, he’s going to have an unbelievable amount of opportunities.”
Interestingly, Johnson has also gone in to predict how many goals Lukaku would manage. He believes 24 strikes should be enough to see him land the gong.
“I think Lukaku is going to be my Golden Boot winner with 24 goals.”
Lukaku scored 24 goals in Serie A last season, a tally that did not see him secure the top scorer’s spot. He was beaten by Ronaldo, then at Juventus. Whether history will repeat itself remains to be seen.
As things stand, the Chelsea striker has three goals in the league. 12 players have scored the same amount or more goals than him so far this season. The Manchester United star has also scored three goals so far.
While we do not doubt that Lukaku will score a large number of goals, competition in the Premier League will be harder. Apart from Ronaldo, the likes of Mohamed Salah and Jamie Vardy among others remain capable contenders in their own right.
