A number of Chelsea stars have made it clear as to what they think of Edouard Mendy following yet another match-winning performance by the goalkeeper, this time at Brentford.
The 29-year-old was the standout performer for the Blues in the hard-fought win over Thomas Frank’s side. The Bees there the kitchen sink at Thomas Tuchel’s side but could find no way past the Senegalese shot-stopper.
Mendy’s performance does not come as a surprise to his teammates, all of who are now well acquainted with his abilities. The performance against Brentford has now seen them come out in support of their teammate who was overlooked for the final 30 shortlist for the Balon d’Or.
According to The Metro, Chelsea star Thiago Silva has slammed the player’s Balon d’Or snub following the Brentford result. Gianluigi Donnarumma is the lone goalkeeper in the final 30 but Mendy’s performances continue to question that judgement.
Silva who missed the match after being away with Brazil in the week took to social media to display his lack of understanding at Mendy’s commission.
He was also joined by yesterday night’s goalscoring hero, Ben Chilwell. The English international left no stone unturned in his praise of the Senegalese ace. It is possible that Chilwell’s strike might as well have been a footnote had it not been for the goalkeeper’s heroics.
“I don’t know how many saves he made but there were a lot of very important saves and he does it every week for us. He bails us out, whether it’s once or twice, or in this game on several occasions. He’s a world-class goalkeeper and is the one we’ve got to thank.”
Antonio Rudiger, another player who missed the game took to Twitter to praise Mendy for his performance. The German international alongside Silva is used to Mendy having their back.
The fact that both centre-backs have come out in support of their goalkeeper shows the respect that Mendy has garnered amongst his teammates. Hopefully, the world at large will also start to take notice.
The Blues shot-stopper has now kept 20 clean sheets in just 38 top-flight appearances in England. Only Petr Cech (26), Pepe Reina (32), Alisson Becker(36) and Roy Carroll (37) achieved the tally in lower games.
