Player News: Antonio Rudiger is happy at Chelsea despite contract standoff

In a conversation with The Guardian (h/t Daily Mail), Antonio Rudiger has revealed that he is happy at Chelsea as negotiations regarding his future continue to rumble on.

Under coach Thomas Tuchel, the German defender has developed into an elite performer and a rock-solid unit in the Chelsea rearguard. He was one of the key members of the Blues’ 20120/21 UEFA Champions League winning campaign. His contributions were essential in winning the coveted trophy.

Though he has looked the part in recent times, Rudiger was the forgotten man during the Frank Lampard era. He struggled to make an impact under the English legend and appeared to be heading to the exit door at the Bridge.

A Thomas Tuchel favourite, the 28-year-old centre back is, without doubt, a sure shot starter when available. His potential departure will be a difficult void for the club to fill.

In the event that no arrangement is achieved by January 1, 2022, Rudiger will be free to foreign clubs keen on his services. The 28-years-old however has not yet given up on his time at the Bridge. He admits to being happy at the club.

‘The most important thing is that I feel happy here. I think if people look at it, they can see I’m happy.’

The former Roma player has said that he can’t disclose the subject of the ongoing talks and he’s only focusing on his performance at this moment. A wise remark given the key role he is to play for us on the field.

‘About the contract situation, I talk with the club. This is for nobody’s ears. There was a talk between Marina and my agent. We have the situation where we are at now and I have nothing to do with all the speculation.”

The Chelsea centre back also suggests that he loves playing under fellow countryman Tuchel who has injected new life in his performance after taking over last season. It seems the Champions League winning manager has made it clear what he expects of him at the pitch – ‘to be aggressive’ and ‘to be a leader.’
