Chelsea at contract standstill with 25-year-old ace despite player’s intent to stay

Chelsea are yet to tie down Andreas Christensen to a new contract amidst fears he could leave in January

According to Goal (h/t The Sun), Andreas Christensen is yet to commit his long-term future to Chelsea as he has just over 6 months on his current contract and could hold talks with foreign clubs in January.

The 25-year-old has been revitalized by Thomas Tuchel at the back in the past year and has become a key member of the squad. While Antonio Rudiger, Thiago Silva, and Cesar Azpilicueta have acted as the more experienced and primary options at the back, Christensen is finally hitting his peak as a top-class centre-back.

Tuchel’s faith in the Dane was clear when he brought him on in the Champions League final earlier in May after Silva had to go off injured. Since the start of the new season, the defender has gone on to make 10 appearances out of a possible 14 for the Blues this season.

He has been a crucial part of the side that has conceded the least goals (3) in the Premier League this season. Moreover, given his age and talent, he could become a focal point at the back in the years to come.

However, the Stamford Bridge outfit now run the risk of allowing him to enter into a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs in January over a potential move in the summer.

The Danish international is in the final year of his contract, and while he is willing to stay at the club, an agreement is yet to be met between the concerned parties.

There is thought to be no contact between the club and the player over the last two months, and the new deal offered by the West London club would keep Christensen as one of the lowest earners at the club.

Thus, a resolution is yet to be found for this conundrum as Tuchel looks ‘desperate’ to keep the academy graduate in his side beyond this season.
