Marc Guehi opens up about tough decision to leave Chelsea this summer

According to football.london, Marc Guehi has talked about his emotional departure from Chelsea this summer as the youngster joined Crystal Palace.

The 21-year-old, who has been a part of Chelsea since he was 7, was yet another product of the famous Cobham academy.

Thus, the youngster was sent out on loan to Swansea last year and he gained a lot of minutes at the club. Guehi featured 45 times across all competitions for The Swans last year and later returned to Chelsea at the end of the season.

The young Englishman, however, sort out a move to Crystal Palace as he felt it was ‘the right decision’. Things have worked out for Guehi, who is now been named captain of the U-21 England national team ahead of their European Championship qualifying campaign.

The defender talked about his departure from Stamford Bridge recently, saying (h/t football.london):

“It wasn’t an easy decision for me to leave Chelsea, having been at the club for so long, since I was seven years old. I’m extremely grateful to everyone at Chelsea who helped me to get this far”

“It is a good opportunity to play regular football at such a high level in the Premier League to test myself and see how far I can go to improve my way. Looking at it that way I think it was the right decision”.

Given that the Blues have the likes of Thiago Silva, Antonio Rudiger, Cesar Azpilicueta, Andreas Christensen, Malang Sarr, and Trevoh Chalobah in the defence, Guehi might have made the right decision as he might have suffered for game-time.

For Chelsea, however, the deal might be looked at in a positive way because even though they lost an academy star, they did get some financial return for it in the form of an £18m fee, which could have helped to balance the books after the Blues signed Romelu Lukaku this summer.
