Sevilla defender Jules Kounde opens up on failed Chelsea move and his future

Speaking in a press conference (h/t Daily Mail), Jules Kounde opened up on his failed move to Chelsea over the summer. The 22-year-old Frenchman addressed the links to Chelsea in a vague manner but refused to dwell on that and is now looking forward to the season with Sevilla.

Not a lot of people associated with Chelsea would say that the club had a bad transfer window. Sure, there were fewer arrivals but players were only signed based on the requirement. However, one name that Chelsea were far too keen on was Jules Kounde. The Blues ran after the Frenchman for weeks during the summer transfer window.

Chelsea were keen on signing Jules Kounde.

It got right down to the wire but Sevilla rejected a £43million offer from the Blues, sticking to their high valuation of the player. Their transfer chief Monchi went on to claim that Chelsea had indeed made an offer but it was not the amount they were looking for. Hence, the whole deal collapsed spectacularly and Kounde was rather infuriated with the club.

However, he has buckled down and started the season well. The talented defender spoke about his potential £68.5m deal to Chelsea collapsing but added that he was now focused on Sevilla.

‘We all know that the summer was troubled. I wouldn’t call it complicated. But it’s in the past now. I am concentrated on the team. The most important showing is the one on the pitch. The team needs me and and I also need the team to give my very best which is what I try to do. Up until this point, I’m happy with the team’s results and my own personal performances, even if I can improve a little bit still and do better than last season.’

Chelsea have not had any major defensive mishaps so far and their only loss has been via a single goal. It’s hard to say how things would have turned out had Kounde made the move. But for now, he is set on Sevilla and Chelsea have their own to worry about. It could well be interesting to see if at all Chelsea try to reignite their efforts to bring Kounde.
