According to Sky Sports, Chelsea are fined £25k after they failed to ensure player’s conduct in their protest to the red card for Reece James in a 1-1 draw at Liverpool. Anthony Taylor, upon reviewing with VAR and an on-field review, deemed the action of James worthy of a red card that saw Chelsea get reduced down to ten men at Anfield.
Chelsea held onto a 1-1 draw away at Anfield. But the highlight of the match remained the red card decision by the match referee, Anthony Taylor. The sending off was followed by a penalty kick which was converted by Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah late in the first half.
The Chelsea players did not take the red card decision kindly and were animated in their protest towards the referee. This was followed by a bust-up between the Chelsea and Liverpool players after Salah scored the spot-kick. Chelsea players lost their cool and could see the decisions going against them after a good opening half.
Despite the heated exchanges at the end of the first half, Chelsea were much calm and focused in the second half. Liverpool, in their search for the winning goal, threw everything against their opponents. With the disadvantage of being a man down, Chelsea stood firm and defended the scoreline of 1-1 and took home a point.
However, the action by the Chelsea players did not go unnoticed as the club is being fined by the FA. The statement released by FA said:
“Chelsea FC has been fined £25,000 for two breaches of FA Rule E20.1which occurred during their Premier League fixture against Liverpool FC on Saturday 28 August 2021.”
The 1-1 draw at Anfield saw Chelsea continue on their unbeaten run. The Blues have collected 7 points out of 9 available and will be back in action this weekend. Thomas Tuchel’s team will continue to mount their title challenge at home against Aston Villa without Reece James who will serve a one-match suspension following the straight red card at Anfield.
