According to The Sun (h/t The Express), Andreas Christensen is on the verge of signing a new contract at Chelsea soon after being offered a pay cut initially.
The Danish centre-back has reignited his form since Thomas Tuchel arrived at the club in January this year. The German coach reverted to a back three and Christensen became a crucial part of not only Chelsea’s surge into the Premier League Top 4 but also in the club’s pursuit of the UEFA Champions League.
In fact, after Thiago Silva had to come off in the UCL final, Christensen proved to be the pivotal figure on the day. The Dane also went on to star for his national team at the Euros this summer as he led them to a semi-final, where they lost to England in extra time.
However, the 25-year-old has maintained his stellar form and has since featured in 6 out of 7 games for the club this season. The centre-back was a crucial part of the club’s weekend victory against rivals Tottenham while he also featured in the London outfit’s incredible defensive performance against Liverpool last month.
And now the Dane’s performances are set to be rewarded with a bumper contract worth £120,000-per-week, as per The Sun (h/t The Express). However, this was not quite the case as the Blues initially offered the defender wages lower than his current £78,000-per-week.
This was because the hierarchy were unsure of where he fits into Tuchel’s plans this season. But now that the 25-year-old seems like a starter, he could now sign a new mega-deal. This is a timely extension by the Blues as the player is in the final year of his contract.
Tuchel would be pleased with this as he would want the future of his defence sorted out as looks to challenge for the biggest titles again this season.
