According to a transfer news update from Fabrizio Romano, AS Saint-Etienne midfield sensation Lucas Gourna-Douath, who has been linked with Chelsea, is set to sign a new contract.
The 17-year-old midfield prodigy enjoyed a breakthrough campaign in 2020/21, as he went on to establish himself as a regular in the middle of the park for the Ligue 1 outfit. Gourna-Douath ended the campaign with 30 appearances despite it being his debut season, impressing with his performances in the defensive midfield slot.
RMC Sport (h/t Express) reported last week that Chelsea were among a number of teams that had shown an interest in the teenage prospect and made an enquiry for him. It also claimed that Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen were also keen while Serie A outfit Atalanta had already launched an opening bid.
However, a move for Gourna-Douath now seems off the table with the youngster set to sign a new contract with his current club, as revealed by Romano. The 17-year-old’s current contract still has two years on it, but it looks like Saint-Etienne are keen on securing his long-term future at the club.
To that end, Gourna-Douath will now be signing a new deal that would run till the summer of 2025, claims Romano, who also mentions that Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund continue to scout the teenage midfield prodigy.
While Chelsea have a solid midfield unit at the moment, Gourna-Douath would have been a top addition with an eye on the future. Even though he may sign a new deal, the club should continue scouting him before reconsidering a move sometime in the near future.
