Thomas Tuchel reveals why Ben Chilwell has not yet featured this season

According to Goal (h/t IB Times), Thomas Tuchel has gone on to explain why Ben Chilwell is yet to play for Chelsea this season. The English defender has not been seen since the end of last season as Marcos Alonso has been putting in the shift in his stead.

It has been a good start to the Premier League season for Chelsea. With two out of three wins, Chelsea have made sure that they keep up the pace in the early days. One could argue that they might have even had a win over Liverpool had Reece James not been sent off in a game that was evenly poised until the incident.

While all that is a discussion for another day, there has been a notable absentee during the four games Chelsea have played so far. Ben Chilwell has yet to play in a game this season and he has only been seen on the benches for the games. Marcos Alonso has been preferred ahead of him and he has not been called in as a sub as well.

Tuchel explained Chilwell’s omission

Chilwell was among the stars of last season, so naturally, there have been growing concerns over his repeated exclusion. Thomas Tuchel went on to clear the air regarding the matter.

“He came back with the latest group [after the Euros and holiday]. When he arrived Marcos Alonso had five weeks in his legs from pre-season. He played the first competitive matches after a fantastic pre-season. He was simply way more ready physically which was natural because of the training session and his fantastic games. He played the Super Cup final and three Premier League games. Also, we only have three substitutions allowed and this is a huge problem.”

Tuchel did go on to add that Chilwell is ready for action but the fixture was not the right one to throw him in. He also resonated with the lack of five subs in the league and pointed to that factor. Nonetheless, Chilwell could get his chance after the international break with a lot of games to play.
