According to an interview done on Ringer FC’s Wrighty’s House Podcast (h/t The Metro), Ian Wright has explained how Chelsea ace Trevoh Chalobah reminds him of Virgil van Dijk.
Chalobah, who has broken into the Chelsea squad this summer, featured in every single pre-season game for the Blues and impressed severely. Thomas Tuchel also fielded him in the UEFA Super Cup final against Villarreal.
The young Englishman was one of the best players for Chelsea on the night as they won the game on penalties. The 22-year-old then went on to make his Premier League debut in the club’s season opener against Crystal Palace.
The youngster made it a special day for himself as he not only made his debut but also scored an incredible long-range goal and helped his side in keeping a clean sheet.
This has led to Arsenal legend Ian Wright rating the player highly and has now talked about how Chalobah reminds him of Virgil van Dijk. He told Ringer FC’s Wrighty’s House Podcast (h/t The Metro):
“You know what he reminded me of, not the same player, not the same stature, but the way Virgil Van Dijk when he played for Celtic, people said he’s just taking liberties just because he’s good and not in the same standard [as others].”
Wright also mentioned about Chalobah’s abilities and his fine defensive display against Crystal Palace.
“Anything that Mateta or Zaha did he [Chalobah] dealt with it, but then his progression with the ball, getting forward with the ball, his tackling, the goal, the emotion”.
The defender has made long strides in his game and might continue to be a part of the first team now despite rumours linking him with a loan move this summer.
While Chelsea will continue to push to sign summer transfer target Jules Kounde, Kurt Zouma may now leave the club after Chalobah’s promotion to the first team.
