Report – Here’s how many fans can attend Chelsea’s Super Cup clash

UEFA Super Cup: Chelsea to take on Villarreal in front of 13000 fans

According to The Independent, 13000 fans will be in attendance when Chelsea take on Villarreal in the UEFA Super Cup at Windsor Park in Belfast in August.

The Blues will take part in the showpiece event courtesy of winning last season’s UEFA Champions League. Thomas Tuchel’s side landed the prestigious trophy after defeating domestic rivals Manchester City in the final. Kai Havertz scored the decisive goal on the night.

Villarreal who defeated Manchester United to win the Europa League last season will be our opponents. While Chelsea will go into the game as heavy favourites, we cannot afford to let our guard down.

According to the report, supporters can apply for general tickets up until 3pm on 2 August. Those successful in their attempts must show proof of a negative PCR or lateral flow Covid-19 test in order to gain entry to the ground. Fans coming from outside the UK will need to comply with border entry restrictions and requirements which are in force at the time of the match. There will be no relaxation granted to ticket holders.

Seats will be made available at prices ranging from 40 euros (£35) for ‘Category 3’ up to 120 euros (£106) for ‘Category 1. Supporters will be able to apply for up to two tickets per person. Should the demand exceed the number of available tickets, a random draw will take place to see who gets lucky.

Despite the positive development of having fans back, it is not set in stone. This is because UEFA have already confirmed that the attendance “may be adjusted according to the latest decisions from the local authorities”. The stadium has a maximum capacity of 18500.

Chelsea’s last appearance in the curtain-raiser occurred in 2019 following our Europa League win. The game went to penalties where then European Champions Liverpool eventually prevailed. Hopefully, we will have better luck this time around.

Chelsea have played in the Super Cup four times, winning it once in 1998. While it is more of a glorified curtain-raiser for the season’s European campaign, the Blues can gain bragging rights by emerging victorious. With the Club World Cup also to come, Thomas Tuchel could very well lead the team to the international treble in his first full season in charge.
