According to transfer news from The Sun, promising Chelsea starlet Henry Lawrence is set to join EFL League One club Wigan Athletic on a season-long loan deal.
Lawrence has been on the books at Chelsea since 2009 and has enjoyed a steady rise through the academy ranks at the club. The right-back, who can play on the opposite flank, as well as in the middle of the park, has made 30 appearances for the Blues’ Under-18 setup, scoring three goals and setting up one more.
Lawrence has also impressed quite a lot with the reserves as well, bagging seven goals and a solitary assist in 35 games. The teenage defender is yet to make his senior debut for Chelsea but did make the bench for a UEFA Champions League clash back in August last year.
However, considering that there is no space for him in the first-team under Thomas Tuchel as of yet, the youngster is set to be shipped out on loan this summer. And, it appears that he is set to follow in the footsteps of another Chelsea academy product, Reece James, by signing for Wigan Athletic on a temporary deal for the 2021/22 season.
James had a stellar loan spell with Wigan in 2018/19 campaign, which propelled him into a first-team role at Chelsea the following season as well as the England national team. The Chelsea right-back was named Wigan’s Fans’ Player of the Season as well as Players’ Player of the Season during his year-long stint with the Latics.
And, Chelsea will be hoping that Lawrence too follows a similar trajectory as he prepares to leave for Wigan on loan. The 19-year-old still has two years left on his contract with the Blues and should return a much-improved player from his stint provided he is given opportunities to shine.
