According to a report by the Daily Telegraph (h/t Sky Sports), Newcastle United are keen on signing Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher.
The Magpies want to bring Joe Willock back to St. James’ Park after he impressed on loan from Arsenal last season. Gallagher, who was also loaned out to a Premier League club during the last campaign, is also a target for Newcastle.
Gallagher was sent to West Bromwich Albion on a temporary one-year spell as he looked for more playing time. And he got plenty of that under Slaven Bilic and Sam Allardyce, making 30 league appearances for them.
He even managed to score twice and record two assists during that time, but could not save his club from relegation. Now back at Stamford Bridge, he could have a tough time getting starts.
Billy Gilmour, who is a highly-rated prospect and broke into the first-team under Frank Lampard, was loaned out to Norwich City earlier this month. That only goes to show the competition in the Blues’ midfield.
On paper, the club doesn’t have a lot of midfielders, but the trio of Mateo Kovacic, Jorginho, and N’Golo Kante is preferred by Thomas Tuchel to a very high extent.
It would be very hard for the 21-year-old Gallagher to displace them. The aforementioned report does not clarify if the move to the Magpies would be a permanent one or a loan deal.
If it is the latter, then it can help the youngster gain vital experience in the first division. However, a permanent deal could be detrimental for Tuchel’s side because Gallagher is a bright prospect that can go on to become a useful player for the club.
