A report by Spanish outlet Marca vita Sport Witness (h/t Liverpool Echo) mentions that both Chelsea and Liverpool have been in contact with Saul Niguez’s agent over a potential move in the summer.
The Spanish midfielder could be surplus to requirements after Los Colchoneros signed Rodrigo De Paul from Udinese. But the report adds that Manchester United still look like his most likely destination.
However, it is positive news for the Blues fans that Thomas Tuchel and co have supposedly made contact regarding a move for Saul Niguez. A fee of €50m is believed to be enough to potentially secure his signature.
The Blues don’t lack big names in their midfield. 2020 UEFA Euro winner Jorginho, N’Golo Kante, and Mateo Kovacic make for a potent midfield line-up.
But while they have the quality, the Blues seem to lack quantity. They have already sold youngster Lewis Bate to Leeds United and Conor Gallagher could follow the 18-year-old to Elland Road next (h/t The Athletic) [Subscription Required].
Billy Gilmour, the young Scottish midfielder, has also been sent out on loan at Norwich City. Amidst this, Thomas Tuchel can use a stellar midfielder like Saul to shore up his midfield for the near future.
At 26, it’s not like Saul will exit his prime years anytime and season and his versatility would allow him to slot in on the right-flank in midfield if and when required. But for that, the Blues would have to formalize their interest in the Spaniard.
They may also have their tasks complicated by Liverpool and United’s potential interest in him. If the Blues do manage to bring in the former Rayo Vallecano midfielder, it could prove to be one of the buys of the summer.
