According to reports in Italy (h/t Football.london), Inter Milan can only sign Chelsea defender, Davide Zappacosta, on a permanent deal.
The Blues defender does not seem to be in Thomas Tuchel’s immediate plans at the club and is poised to exit Stamford Bridge in the summer. Inter are interested, but any chance of a loan deal has dissipated.
Antonio Conte signed Zappacosta from Torino in the summer of 2017. However, the right-back failed to find favour under any of the managers that followed the Italian’s Chelsea reign.
Since joining the London-based outfit, Zappacosta has been loaned out twice; first to AS Roma in the 2019/20 season, and then to Genoa in the last campaign.
His last league appearance for the club came against Leicester City in a 0-0 draw played out in May 2019. Since then, he has plied his trade in Serie A and it seems he can continue doing that if Inter formalize their interest in him.
The 29-year-old can play on the right flank in a back five or a back four defensive system. With Thomas Tuchel famously deploying a system that requires 3 centre-backs and 2 wing-backs, Zappacosta can be useful.
Reece James is a bright prospect but the club do not have any natural wing-back as his backup. To prevent the young Englishman from being overburdened, Tuchel should look at potential solutions.
Cesar Azpilicueta is no alien to playing down that side but the Spaniard’s services were required in the centre-back area last season, hinting at the club’s lack of depth in the backline.
