Chelsea began their pre-season ahead of the 2021/22 campaign in style with a thumping 6-1 win over Peterborough United, riding on a Hakim Ziyech hat-trick.
The Blues took on Peterborough in their first pre-season friendly in a behind closed doors event at the Cobham training facility on Saturday afternoon. And the outcome was a very pleasing one for Thomas Tuchel & co.
Given that a number of regulars are yet to return from holiday, fringe players and forgotten squad members got a chance in Tuchel’s 3-4-2-1. Indeed players like Danny Drinkwater, Trevoh Chalobah, Jake Clarke-Salter, Malang Sarr were among those involved in the first half.
Peterborough took the lead from the penalty spot but Chelsea came back strongly through Tammy Abraham and Christian Pulisic, with the latter also converting from a spot-kick. Tuchel changed all his ten outfield players at half-time, with the likes of Ziyech, Armando Broja, Conor Gallagher getting a run-out.
And Ziyech made the ideal start as he scored three goals in the second period, in between which youngster Broja too got his first goal for Chelsea to hit Peterborough United for a six.
Fans were pleased with Ziyech making an impact after coming on, given his difficult debut season. The Moroccan arrived at Chelsea last summer from Ajax but wasn’t able to nail down a spot in the side. A good pre-season ahead of 2021/22 could change that for him and safe to say he could not have started any better.
