It has been a special year of Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy. From making a high-profile transfer from Ligue 1 club Rennes to the Blues, the Senegalese went on to play a starring role in the club’s successful campaign.
Indeed, Mendy played an integral role in Chelsea going on to win the UEFA Champions League in the 2020/21 campaign, while also helping the team to a top-four finish in the Premier League.
In his debut season with the west London giants, Mendy racked up 44 appearances across all competitions, firmly establishing himself as the first-choice ahead of the world’s most expensive goalkeeper in Kepa Arrizabalaga. And the Senegalese international let in just 29 goals during this period, managing as many as 25 clean sheets. (h/t Transfermarkt)
The 29-year-old managed to address a major problem position for Chelsea after coming in and took little time to adapt to the rigours of the Premier League. So, it was only well-deserved when Edouard Mendy was named the “Best African International” at the Ghana Football Awards 2021 on Saturday night.
