According to transfer news from The Sun, Chelsea star Olivier Giroud is close to sealing a move to AC Milan. The veteran Frenchman will be leaving on a free transfer and is likely to move to Serie A as he wants to play in Italy and alongside Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
The 34-year-old Giroud has been with Chelsea since January 2018 when he sealed a transfer from Arsenal. The veteran forward has been a handy player for the Blues, chipping in with vital goals on a consistent basis. So far this term, Giroud has racked up a tally of 11 goals from 31 matches in all competitions, scoring some important goals.
However, the Frenchman’s future is away from Chelsea. Indeed, Giroud’s current deal with Chelsea runs out at the end of the season. That has led to interest from a host of clubs in Italy, especially AC Milan and Lazio.
Giroud is free to negotiate a deal with any club at this stage. It appears that AC Milan are close to wrapping up a deal for the World Cup winner. It has been reported that negotiations with Milan director Paolo Maldini have been going well. Then there’s the prospect of playing Champions League football for an Italian side along with tax cuts on his proposed £65,000-a-week deal.
Another appealing factor for Giroud is the prospect of playing alongside the legendary Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The big and evergreen Swede is still going strong at the age of 39. Giroud has been a very useful squad player. Even at 34, the Frenchman adds a lot of value to any side but has become a bit-part player in recent months. Letting him leave for Milan shouldn’t hurt Chelsea that much.
