According to The Sun’s Alan Nixon, Chelsea youngster Luke McCormick could be headed for the League One this summer with AFC Wimbledon emerging as favourites to sign him.
McCormick has been with the Chelsea setup since 2005, having joined the youth ranks as a six-year-old. The midfielder has risen through various age group levels and has accumulated plenty of appearances for the club’s Under-18 and reserve sides.
The 22-year-old has had two spells away on loan from Chelsea, having spent the first half of the 2019/20 term at Shrewsbury Town before spending the entire last season with Bristol Rovers. McCormick enjoyed a fairly impressive spell with the Gas in League One, bagging 46 appearances in all competitions, in which he scored six times and set up two more. (h/t Transfermarkt)
Back at Chelsea now, McCormick does not have a clear pathway to the first-team given the plethora of options already available for manager Thomas Tuchel. Indeed, the Blues already have Jorginho, N’Golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic, Billy Gilmour and Mason Mount as part of the roster.
In addition, the likes of Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Ross Barkley, Conor Gallagher are all set to return to the club after their respective loan spells. So, it is quite evident that given the abundance of options in midfield,
McCormick is unlikely to be involved with the first-team. And with his contract expiring in a year, the 22-year-old could be set to join Wimbledon. Alan Nixon adds that the deal is likely to be a free transfer with Chelsea having a sell-on clause.
