4th of July 2021 was a day where contract renewals were raining at Chelsea as they extended deals for manager Thomas Tuchel, Thiago Silva, and Olivier Giroud.
The German manager initially joined Chelsea on a short-term contract when he replaced Frank Lampard this January. However, a Champions League triumph saw his stocks go up, with a contract renewal following shortly.
The club website reports that Tuchel has seen his contract extended until the summer of 2024. As if that wasn’t good news enough, the European champions then revealed that Thiago Silva had also agreed to a new deal.
The Brazilian veteran was signed by Chelsea as a free agent last year on a one-year deal. And now, the club has opted to keep the 36-year-old for another year after a stellar season at the club.
In the most unexpected news of the day, the club itself revealed that Olivier Giroud has also extended his stay. The French striker has been linked with a move to AC Milan recently.
However, Chelsea have announced that the option to extend the 34-year-old’s stay at Stamford Bridge by one year was exercised by the club back in April itself. (h/t Chelsea official website)
This would be too much good news for Chelsea fans to take in one go as the club gears up for a new season after the summer. Giroud has been vital coming off the bench on many occasions while Silva’s leadership cannot be doubted.
It now remains to be seen what effect these two renewals have on Chelsea’s summer plans. The club has been linked with signing a striker as well as a defender in the upcoming transfer window.
