According to transfer news from Metro, Chelsea could look to hijack Manchester United’s move for Raphael Varane. While United are hoping to get the Real Madrid defender to partner Harry Maguire, Chelsea are still in with a shot. The Blues, however, have some alternate targets already in mind.
Chelsea have a solid group of central defenders at their disposal. The problem, however, is that two of the more reliable names are past the 30-year mark. Cesar Azpilicueta and Thiago Silva might be quality defenders but they will need to be replaced sooner than later.
Varane has been a dependable presence at the back for Real Madrid for almost a decade now and has won every trophy possible during his time at the club. However, the Frenchman is entering the final year of his contract with Los Blancos and is yet to commit his future to the Spanish club.
With time running out and no contract being agreed, there is a good chance he could be sold. Manchester United want the defender to partner Maguire in defence. However, Chelsea could just look to swoop in and hijack the deal from under their noses. In case they cannot, Chelsea also have a few alternatives lined up.
At 28 years of age, Varane fits the category of a prime world-class defender that Chelsea need. He is not only young for a centre-back but also comes with a winning mentality. It remains to be seen how Chelsea proceed in the race for his signature. It won’t be the first time Chelsea have hijacked a deal for a player Manchester United have wanted.
