Chelsea News: Thiago Silva close to signing contract extension

According to news from Daily Star, Thiago Silva is all set to extend his contract with Chelsea. Reputed football journalist Fabrizio Romano confirmed that the one-year extension clause will be activated in the coming weeks which will see Silva stay at the club until 2022.

The 36-year-old joined Chelsea this summer and despite his age, he has seamlessly adapted to the fast-paced nature of the Premier League. He has already played more than 20 games this season. However, he missed a few games with injuries and Andreas Christensen took over then.

Silva’s experience and leadership have been visible on the pitch and Chelsea look a far more secure side with him in the line-up. The former PSG man was on the sidelines with a hamstring issue but has since returned to action. He has a one-year extension in his contract, which can be triggered by a mutual agreement.

Fabrizio Romano confirmed that the one-year extension will be triggered by Chelsea as the player is also keen on extending his stay. While Chelsea have a bevvy of options in defence, Silva’s experience is unparalleled.

More Chelsea News:

It is definitely good news that Silva will extend his stay with the club. While he isn’t exactly a long-term option, his presence for another season could allow Chelsea to funnel transfer funds to other areas of requirement such as the attack.
