Speaking to Sky Sports (h/t The Independent) after his team’s win on Saturday, Timo Werner explained that he celebrated his goal by pointing to the Chelsea bench against West Ham United because of a pre-match chat with two of his teammates.
The German striker broke a 10-match goal drought when he converted Ben Chilwell’s cross in the 43rd minute. That turned out to be the only goal of the game as the Blues hung on for the three points.
Werner also had a big chance to score later on and make the lead more comfortable, but he squandered it. And joking about it after the match, he said that one goal was probably ‘enough’ for the day.
“If I score twice today it might be too much, I’m joking. I’m very happy we win this game, very important in the race for the top four.”
Tammy Abraham and Callum Hudson-Odoi have found starts hard to come by under Thomas Tuchel, while Werner has remained a constant. But it turns out the trio have no bad blood between them.
In fact, a casual pre-match conversation was the reason why Werner pointed to the English pair on the away bench after he put Chelsea ahead. He revealed their confidence in him as they told him before the game that he would score.
“Before the game, it was a little bit funny, Callum said to me that I would score today, and then maybe 30 seconds later, Tammy comes to me and said I would score today, and then both said when you score today, point to me. It was a funny situation, I’m very happy I can point to them today.”
This was Werner’s first goal after 7 league games and he would hope that his most recent goal helps him recapture his scoring form before the Blues take on Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League semi-final next week.
