According to transfer news from Football.london, Chelsea linked Jerome Boateng will be allowed to leave Bayern Munich at the end of the season. The Bavarian club are not willing to extend his contract beyond this season and he will leave as a free agent.
Chelsea already have a decent stock of central defenders at their disposal. The likes of Cesar Azpilicueta, Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger have been impressive but their defensive fragilities came to the fore as West Brom looped 5 past them at the weekend.
While it could be attributed to the fact that Chelsea largely played the game with 10 men, Chelsea still had all their defensive players. After Silva was sent off, Christensen came on in place of Hakim Ziyech.
The Blues have been linked with the Bayern Munich man for a while, along with Arsenal. Hasan Salihamidzic, their sporting director, confirmed that the player would be leaving the club after mutual discussions.
“That was a joint decision of the club’s management and the coach was also involved in it. I explained it to Jerome, and he was very understanding.”
While Boateng does not represent a long-term option, he is surely a quality player. Chelsea have made use of the free-agent market once with Silva. Boateng could prove to be a similar signing if Chelsea decide to go ahead in the summer.
