Chelsea could be banned from Champions League semi-finals

According to news from Sky Sports, the Danish FA have said that Chelsea could be banned from their Champions League semi-finals. Three breakaway clubs, Real Madrid, Chelsea and Manchester City are all onboard the European Super League and could hence be banned from his season’s last four.

The news of the proposed European Super League (ESL) has managed to send shockwaves through the football community since it broke out less than 48 hours ago. There have been strong reactions from UEFA and the respective FA of the involved countries. The 12 founding clubs have been condemned and sanctions have been talked about for clubs as well as their players.

Fans were in equal bewilderment as this cash-rich league starts to come to fruition leaving behind the Champions League and other top domestic leagues in tatters. While plans are there to start the tournament as soon as next season, there have been talks of punishing the clubs this season itself.

The Danish FA warned that three of this season’s semi-finalists in the Champions League could be banned from playing the ties.

“The clubs should be thrown out and I expect it to happen on Friday. Then we will see how the Champions League will finish. I don’t think they can do it to the fans and to everyone who loves football.

“During the weekend, some people negotiated with the other side, which is not fair to the president of UEFA and those who have spent time on the Champions League model in the past years. They can’t do that. There have to be some consequences, and, this time, I think there will be.”

UEFA have basically gone to war with this, trying to find a way to nip this in the bud. Expulsions from the league, players being banned from international competitions, legal and sporting sanctions have been proposed. It remains to be seen what happens of the semi-finals this season given what the Danish FA has said.
