Thomas Tuchel did not hold back in showing his gratitude to Emerson Palmieri after his injury-time goal sealed the win for Chelsea (h/t Football.london). The Italian was only brought on in the 93rd minute and scored just a minute later.
Emerson’s goal meant that Chelsea won the tie 3-0 on aggregate and progressed to the next round. He has been a peripheral figure ever since arriving at Chelsea but this season, he has been left in the cold, with Marcos Alonso and Ben Chilwell competing for the left wing-back role under Tuchel.
Before this little cameo against Atletico Madrid, Emerson had played just once under Tuchel. However, Tuchel explained that the full-back suffers due to his managerial decisions.
He explained that Emerson has had to compete for his place but has been training very well. He also claimed that those few minutes against Atletico were a reward for his efforts.
“I’m so happy for him. The guy suffers all the time from my decisions. We have three players for one position with Marcos Alonso, Ben Chilwell, and Emerson.
Since we started to play with a back three and chose different players so he only had the chance to show up in one cup game, which he did.
Everyone was seen celebrating with Emerson as he scored the last goal in the game. Tuchel praised his professionalism as he never had a bad attitude and kept training hard.
Finally, the boss said that he was happy for the player and was grateful that he performed what was asked of him.
