Thomas Tuchal making Chelsea players use ‘secret codes’ in order to gain an advantage over opponents

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel is making his players communicate in code words on the field

A report by The Sun (h/t Daily Mail) claims that Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel is making is players use ‘secret codes’ to trigger certain actions on the field in order to fool their opponents.

This includes a set of key ‘triggers’ that tell players what to do on the field. This entails players communicating what side of the pitch to make a run on or what kind of delivery will come into the box from a set piece.

The tactic is certainly working well for Chelsea as the Blues are unbeaten in all 12 of their games under the former PSG boss. And the opposition teams are apparently troubled by this as well.

A rival player told The Sun (h/t Daily Mail) that the secret language used by the Chelsea players on the field left his team completely clueless.

“You have no idea what’s going on but they know exactly what they are doing. It just makes the attacks quicker and more deadly because sometimes a guy passing does not even have to look up to know where the runner will be.”

Tuchel keeps innovating

Such a strategy can be worked out during the game. But what makes Chelsea’s application of it special, according to the rival player, is the fact that they use different words for the same tactic as the match goes on.

“They use different words all the time too, so you can’t even work it out during the game.”

Tuchel’s innovative ideas in the training ground certainly know no bounds. Earlier this season, he made his players train with miniature footballs in order to increase their ball control.

But whatever he seems to be doing is working. Chelsea are well in contention for a top 4 finish this season, something which started looking improbable under Frank Lampard in January.
