According to Daily Mail, Gareth Southgate feels that Mason Mount and Declan Rice can cover for the injured Jordan Henderson. Apparently, the England manager is happy with the options he has in midfield and hopes that Jordan Henderson’s injury will not be much of an issue.
With Jordan Henderson a doubt for the upcoming Euro 2020, the likes of Mason Mount and Declan Rice are prime candidates to replace the Liverpool captain. Mount and Rice share a long history with each other. They were a part of the academy earlier in their careers.
Gareth Southgate felt that these two could be a good option for England in the coming games and Euro 2020.
‘They did very well in the game we played against Iceland,’ said Southgate at his pre-match press conference. Obviously that deeper position, Mason doesn’t play for his club but I think it’s possible for him. He’s a very intelligent player, he can play four, eight or 10. I think he would be able to adjust as required.’
Mount was in action against San Marino and claimed one assist for Raheem Sterling during the 5-0 rout. He created the most number of chances (8), despite playing only the first half. He was replaced by Jude Bellingham then.
England will face Albania next on Sunday followed by Poland on Wednesday. With a few injuries to key players, Mount and co. will likely keep their place in the side for the upcoming games. It is definitely good that the manager mentioned Mount for his performance.
