Ben Chilwell has opened up on him being dropped by Thomas Tuchel since his arrival at Chelsea (via The Athletic h/t Metro). The left-back claimed he wasn’t really surprised by the same as he felt his form had tailed off in the final weeks under Frank Lampard before he was sacked.
A big-money arrival from Leicester City in the summer, Chilwell was slotted directly into the side on his arrival. He did start off on a bright note and produced some fine performances for the Blues. He was even afforded a start under Thomas Tuchel in his first game in charge.
However, post that Chilwell lost his place to Marcos Alonso as Tuchel deemed the Spaniard a better fit in his 3-4-2-1 formation as a wing-back. From thereon, Alonso was given a consistent run of games after being frozen out by Lampard.
Being dropped out ‘deflated’ Chilwell but he was soon called back into action as he was given the nod for the Manchester United game. The Englishman did take it in his stride as he understood that Alonso also deserved a chance to prove himself.
Nonetheless, he was not really surprised at Tuchel’s decision to drop him, accepting that his performance levels had dropped even under Lampard. He did not complain about the situation though. Instead, he worked hard to get back into consideration and will be hoping to retain his place in the forthcoming games.
