Thiago Silva willing to extend Chelsea stay for another season

Thiago Silva willing to extend Chelsea stay for another season

According to The Telegraph (h/t Metro), Chelsea have been handed a massive boost in their hopes of retaining the services of veteran defender Thiago Silva beyond the end of the ongoing campaign.

The 36-year-old Brazilian joined the Blues on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain this past summer. He put pen to paper on a one-year contract upon his arrival at Stamford Bridge, with the option of extending it by a further 12 months.

Now, as per the report, Silva is keen to remain in West London for another season after making a smooth transition to the Premier League.

The former AC Milan star has established himself as a key cog in Chelsea’s backline and it is believed that his presence has had a positive influence on the development of younger players around him.

Silva has started 17 out of Chelsea’s 23 fixtures in the Premier League so far this season, offering a lot of stability and experience at the back. He is currently on the sidelines after picking up a muscle injury against Tottenham and missed the 2-1 win over Sheffield United.

While Thomas Tuchel has ruled him out for the FA Cup tie against Barnsley and the league fixture against Newcastle, the manager has indicated that Silva could be back in action for the Blues’ trip to Southampton on February 20. (h/t Metro)

However, the German has indicated that he isn’t willing to take any risks with the veteran’s injury by rushing him back into the side.

The 36-year-old’s impact at Stamford Bridge can be well documented by the club’s upturn in form at the back. Chelsea conceded as many as 54 goals in the PL last season but have shipped just 24 in 23 games so far this term with Silva in the mix.
