According to Daily Telegraph’s football correspondent Matt Law, Chelsea will look to prioritize a central defender and a striker once the summer transfer window opens.
Law mentions that wages are proving to be a problem for the Blues at the moment. Chelsea supposedly missed out on Dayot Upamecano to Bayern Munich because they did not want a bidding war over his wages.
Moreover, their transfer targets in the two positions also pose a problem in terms of wages. As reported earlier, David Alaba’s wage demands are too high for Chelsea right now.
On top of that, the Blues are also having the same problem with the Norwegian. The club have been interested in Haaland for a while now, but his wage and his agent, Mino Raiola, currently pose a problem. (h/t Matt Law)
The interest in a defender and striker makes sense despite Chelsea solidifying those positions in the summer. The Blues brought in Timo Werner and Thiago Silva amongst a host of other players.
Werner started well, but is now on a dire run which has seen him go blank in his last 14 league games. Meanwhile, the 34-year-old Olivier Giroud has featured in just 4 of Chelsea’s last 10 games.
In light of this, competition up front would undoubtedly help Chelsea. Moreover, Haaland’s 22 goals in as many appearances this season for Borussia Dortmund show what he can bring to Chelsea. (h/t transfermarkt)
At the back, Silva has been immense since his move from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer. However, it is unrealistic to expect the veteran to play regularly in the coming years.
In that sense, the 28-year-old David Alaba could be a great signing. However, the Austrian prefers playing in defensive midfield rather than at centre-back. (h/t Matt Law)
