According to The Sun, Chelsea defender, Marcos Alonso wants to sign a new contract with the club after his resurgence under new boss Thomas Tuchel.
The Spanish international has been with Chelsea since 2016, having arrived from Fiorentina. Having been a prominent member of the team, Alonso had lost his place in the starting XI under former boss Frank Lampard.
Indeed, Alonso hadn’t been used by the Blues’ legend in a game since September. However, things have taken a turn for the better for Alonso following Lampard’s sacking last month.
New manager Thomas Tuchel has offered a clean slate to all his players, including Alonso. And the Spanish full-back has made the most of his chances under the German tactician.
Indeed, since starting in Tuchel’s second game in-charge against Burnley, Alonso has been preferred ahead of summer signing Ben Chilwell. The fact that the manager plays with a three-man backline system with two wing-backs has served to the Spaniard’s benefit, given that he excels in such a role.
Now, having worked his way back into the first-team, Alonso has his sights set on signing a contract extension with Chelsea.
The 30-year-old still has two years left on his current contract with the club, which expires in the summer of 2023 and is now hoping to sign a one-year extension.
Alonso has certainly benefitted from the change of managers and the change of tactics. However, talks for a new contract would be prematur at this point.
The game against Southampton on Saturday showed that he is still not at his best. For now, the Spaniard must solely focus on the performances and the rewards will duly follow.
