Speaking to ZDF (h/t Daily Mail), Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has addressed the future of defender Niklas Sule, who has been linked with Chelsea.
A product of the TSG Hoffenheim youth setup, Sule made the jump to Bayern Munich in 2017 and has been a regular fixture at the heart of the Bavarians defence.
A consistent, top quality player for club and country, the 25-year-old cuts an imposing physical presence at the back and backs it up with technical qualities as well.
However, his future at the Allianz Arena has been called into question of late, with Sule set to enter the final year of his contract with Bayern at the end of the season. This has seen Chelsea getting linked with the German international. (h/t Daily Mail)
Rummenigge, however, has claimed that Bayern want to keep hold of the 25-year-old and will hold talks over a new deal for him soon.
“We want the good German national team players at FC Bayern. Niklas still has one year of the contract. We will hold talks and see where they’ll lead. We will look at the whole thing seriously & calmly by the summer.”
The Bayern chief, however, also added that an extension will only be offered if the club’s financial predicament due to the pandemic resolves itself and they are able to find a reasonable solution with the player.
“Corona (Covid-19 pandemic) has also caused financial damage to FC Bayern. If we find a solution, we are happy to extend the contract, but that will only be possible under certain conditions.”
With Thiago Silva turning 37 soon, adding another centre-back to eventually replace the Brazilian would be the ideal move for Chelsea. And Sule, given his age and experience at the highest level, would be a viable option.
Any move, though, is likely to hinge on how his contract negotiations with FC Bayern go along.
