Chelsea assistant coach reveals key objective for the season

Chelsea assistant coach Zsolt Low has revealed that Thomas Tuchel and his staff are aiming to secure a top-four finish in their first season in charge at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues were considered as genuine title challengers before the start of the campaign following their multi-million-pound spending spree in the summer under former manager Frank Lampard.

Things seemed to be heading in the right direction when Chelsea went top of the table at the start of December. However, it all went downhill for Lampard thereafter, with the Blues losing five of their following eight league fixtures.

The club’s dismal run of form eventually culminated in the dismissal of Lampard from the helm. Chelsea were placed ninth in the standings when Tuchel and his staff took over the reins.

And Low, who was also the deputy for Tuchel in his previous job at PSG, has made it clear that the staff didn’t arrive in West London with the immediate objective of winning the league in the ongoing campaign. Speaking to M1 in his native Hungary (h/t Goal), the Blues assistant coach said:

“We didn’t arrive with the goal of winning the title in these few months.

“It would be a brilliant performance to be able to finish in the top four, which the club would be happy with.

“It’s amazingly difficult to win against any team, not only to be prepared against sensational players, but the very best coaches are also working in the Premier League.”

While Lampard’s sacking has evoked mixed reactions from the club’s fanbase, there’s no denying that Tuchel and his staff have made an instant impact at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea are still unbeaten since the German took charge, winning three of their first four games so far.

That has seen the Blues climb up to 5th in the PL standings, just a point shy of 4th-placed Liverpool. However, Chelsea’s top-four credentials could well rest on how they fare in a daunting run of fixtures between February 20 and March 20.

That includes league clashes against Southampton, Man United, Leeds United, Everton and Liverpool, as well as both legs of the Champions League last-16 tie against Atletico Madrid.
