Italian international Jorginho has experienced his share of setbacks and criticism since joining Chelsea in the summer of 2018. He had fallen down the pecking order under Frank Lampard.
However, with Thomas Tuchel taking charge, he has been given a new lease of life. Jorginho has so far played all three games the German has managed, even scoring the winner against Tottenham Hotspur.
An accomplished penalty-kick taker, the Italian had seen three of his attempts saved this season. He once again stepped up against Spurs and worryingly stuttered in his run-up. The strike was, however, clean and Hugo Lloris was left powerless to stop him.
According to Football.London, Jorginho admitted that the stutter which represents a change from his trademark hop, skip and jump approach was intentional. The new approach paid dividends against Spurs.
The 29-year-old admitted that he had been practising his penalty skills and was confident ahead of stepping up against Spurs. He believed his new technique would prove better and so far he has been proven right.
“I changed the technique because I felt that way could be better, and it worked. You saw the result.”
Jorginho appears to have taken well to Tuchel’s ideas at Chelsea. With no time to waste, the Blues squad have had to dive in headfirst and take Tuchel’s ideas at face value.
With two wins and a draw, the team is slowly but surely getting into the fray. As things stand, Jorginho could be set to play a major role in our resurgence.
“We need to stay calm, keep working hard and then the results are a consequence of what we are doing every day.”
Whether Jorginho will continue to be Chelsea’s preferred penalty taker remains to be seen. The 29-year-old’s efforts to mix up his technique will definitely make him harder to predict.
