New Blues manager Thomas Tuchel plays down Chelsea title hopes

According to The Guardian, Thomas Tuchel has played down Chelsea title hopes following his first game in charge.

The 47-year-old took over the reins at Stamford Bridge from club legend Frank Lampard on Tuesday. He had his baptism of fire the very next day against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

While the Blues showed enough promise, they are far from the finished product. Chelsea had the lion’s share of possession but failed to produce the end product.

Speaking after the game, Tuchel admitted that one does not expect anything less than challenging for the top honours at Chelsea.

A serial winner, Roman Abramovich is someone who keeps track of the results. His dismissal of Lampard showcases his commitment to winning. It is fair to assume that Tuchel will not be set a lower bar.

“When you sign for Chelsea as a player or like me as a manager it’s absolutely right you sign for the expectation to challenge for titles.”

Thomas Tuchel is looking towards the future with Chelsea

“At the moment there are a lot of teams between us and the place No 4, there are a lot of points between us. So maybe it is the best moment now, by stepping up in the middle of the season, to not lose the focus by looking too far but work on a daily basis on the details in our game.”

Chelsea are currently 11 points behind league leaders Manchester City. However, the fourth spot is just four points away and within reach. Tuchel has not made any dramatic promises and is instead focused on closing the gap.

While that remains our reality for now, there is no reason why things cannot get better in the future. In fact, he believes the hard work will pay off, eventually.

The German tactician believes Chelsea have what it takes to hurt any team. Having inherited a strong group of stars, the onus is now on the 47-year-old to deliver.

Rome was not built in a day and Tuchel will need to be patient before his vision is implemented on the field. For now, the club will take it one game at a time.
