Olivier Giroud reveals clause that could see him extend Chelsea stay

Speaking to Dauphine via Sport Witness (h/t Football.london), Olivier Giroud has revealed he could stay on at Chelsea beyond this season.

The French veteran earned himself a one-year deal following his heroics in the second half of last season. With Tammy Abraham out injured, Giroud stepped up to the plate and helped us ensure a top-four finish.

Despite bringing in Timo Werner, Giroud continues to step up when needed. In fact, the Frenchman has outscored the German despite having just a third of his playing time.

“My career, in the short term, I see it at Chelsea.”

With Werner largely spending time on the left flank, Giroud could be set to share the striking duties with Abraham when needed. The Frenchman continues to be linked with a move away this January.

Juventus manager Andrea Pirlo too accepted recently that Giroud would be a ‘handy’ addition to his side.

The 34-year-old however has no plans to leave Stamford Bridge in the immediate future. He also revealed there is a one-year option in his deal to extend his stay.

“I’m coming to the end of my contract at Chelsea in June, even if we have the option of another year.”

“We’ll go over things at the end of the year. But, once again, I have the ambition of winning something with Chelsea this season because I have a lot of hope due to the quality of our squad.”

Giroud is today an experienced and dependable senior member of the Chelsea squad. While we will eventually have to replace him at some point in the future, it remains to be seen if that will happen next summer.

The way he has been performing, there are more reasons to keep him on than not.
