According to Football Insider (h/t Football.london), Chelsea are facing the prospect of losing teenage midfielder Marcel Lewis on a free transfer in the summer.
A product of the Chelsea youth setup, Lewis joined the club’s academy from Cambridge United in 2016. He has been a revelation coming through the ranks at the club.
An attacking midfielder by trade, Lewis can also play out wide. The 19-year-old made 46 appearances for Chelsea’s Under-18 side, scoring and assisting 13 goals each.
Lewis got a taste of Under-23 football last season and he has been a regular for the Blues’ reserves this term. In 10 appearances across all competitions in 2020/21, the teenager has scored four goals and assisted four more as well. (h/t Transfermarkt)
The report states that Lewis has been training with the Chelsea first-team in recent weeks. However, he is yet to make his senior debut. In fact, he hasn’t made Frank Lampard’s matchday squad as of yet either.
Held in high regard within the club, Lewis is in the final six months of his current contract. And talks over a new deal haven’t progressed as per plans, with the youngster yet to agree terms over a new contract.
This has opened up the doors for clubs to make a move for the teenage midfielder. As per the report, Lewis is attracting plenty of interest from clubs in the Premier League as well as the German Bundesliga.
With him entering the final six months of his contract, clubs from Germany can negotiate with him over a pre-contract agreement for a free transfer at the end of the season.
Lewis has impressed with the reserves this term, showing that there is plenty of potential within him. Hopefully, Chelsea can tie him down to a new contract and secures his future at the club.
