Alexi Lalas says Christian Pulisic is ‘too good’ for Chelsea

Speaking on the State of the Union podcast (h/t Metro), former USA international Alexi Lalas said that Christian Pulisic needs better players around him at Chelsea.

Pulisic signed for the Blues in the summer of 2019 from Borussia Dortmund, He had an impressive debut season in the Premier League where he scored 11 times for Chelsea in 34 appearances.

This season, however, has turned out differently. The 22-year-old has missed a large chunk of this campaign due to injury.

This has prevented him from getting a consistent run of starts in Frank Lampard’s side. He has, however, featured in the last 5 matches for Chelsea.

Christian Pulisic suffered a hamstring injury earlier this season.

He played just over 20 minutes in Chelsea’s 4-0 win against Morecambe in the FA Cup rout this weekend. Before that, the American started on the left-hand side in a 3-1 loss to Manchester City in the Premier League.

Too good for the Blues?

Citing that match, Lalas highlights that Pulisic was the only Chelsea player who tried on the pitch.

“In the loss against Manchester City last week, he was fantastic. He was the only player in Chelsea who tried.”

The former USA international, who had 96 caps for his national team, says that the winger is too good for Chelsea, and that the club should surround him with better players to not ‘waste’ his talent.

Christian Pulisic celebrates after scoring for Chelsea.

Chelsea would hope that the former Dortmund man starts performing consistently again as they enter in the second half of the season. The Blues have dropped to 9th in the table after just one win in their last 5 matches.

Our next task is a trip to Craven Cottage on Saturday against Fulham, in what looks like a must-win game for the struggling Blues.
