According to Sky Sports, AC Milan have thrown their hat in the ring for Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud.
The Rossoneri are currently top of the Serie A and are chasing their first Scudetto since 2010/11. The Italians are keen on signing a replacement for ageing striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic. (h/t Football.london)
Although they had considered Giroud as a potential signing earlier, he was considered to be too old to replace the Swedish ace. It would now appear that there is still some semblance of interest in the French maverick.
Giroud started the season behind the likes of Timo Werner and Tammy Abraham in the Chelsea pecking order. In fact, he started just one of the club’s opening 16 games.
It is a testament to his ability that despite the lack of opportunities, he is today the club’s top scorer for the season. With nine goals in 15 appearances, Giroud averages more than a goal per 90 minutes played. (h/t BBC)
The France striker is out of contract in the summer. However, he has been given assurances that he will play regularly if he stays at Stamford Bridge. Given how he has taken his opportunities so far, it is well earned.
Speaking to Dauphine via Sport Witness (h/t Football.london), Giroud has revealed he could stay on at Chelsea beyond this season. Whether such a decision will be made or not remains to be seen.
Milan is not the only Serie A side keen on the 34-year-old’s services. Defending champions Juventus are also keen on securing Giroud. The Old Lady is also keeping tabs on Napoli’s Arkadiusz Milik and Fernando Llorente.
Giroud is today an experienced and dependable senior member of the Chelsea squad. Signed from Arsenal in 2018, he has come up trumps when needed, scoring a number of important goals for the club.
Giroud scored 18 goals in 34 appearances for Chelsea in 2020, more than any other player in Blue during the same time period.
