Edouard Mendy continues to feature in the headlines that paint Chelsea shot-stoppers in poor light.
The Senegalese goalkeeper got off to a good start as he stopped a goal-bound effort by Aston Villa skipper Jack Grealish.
He followed that up by making a right hash of a cross that Matty Cash thankfully fired over. While his distribution of the ball was on point, it is fair to say he could have done much better to stop Anwar Al Ghazi’s equaliser.
He was caught out once again as El Ghazi took a pop at goal from distance. Thankfully for Mendy and Chelsea, the ball struck the crossbar and went out.
Veteran striker Olivier Giroud looked to be the hero on the night as Frank Lampard’s Chelsea went into the break a goal to the good.
The Blues went into the game on the back of three defeats in four Premier League games. With the chasm between us and league leaders Liverpool widening, there was even talk of Lampard’s job being on the line.
Having dropped another two points, Lampard will not have escaped the crosshairs that firmly have him in their sights.
Fans meanwhile were not happy with Mendy, who they compared to former No.1 Kepa Arrizabalaga. A number of them took to Twitter to lament over the goalkeeper’s mistake.
Mendy is by no means a bad keeper. However, given what fans have endured of Kepa in recent months, the error of margin afforded to the summer signing might not be too generous.
