Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville urge Chelsea star Edouard Mendy to learn from his mistakes

Speaking on Monday Night Football (h/t Daily Star), Premier League legends Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville have expressed doubts regarding Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.

The Senegalese star was a surprise signing in the summer as the club looked to replace an underwhelming Kepa Arrizabalaga.

The 28-year-old has enjoyed a fine start to life at the Bridge and displaced Kepa from the starting spot. However, a couple of high-profile errors in recent matches against Leeds United and Everton have proven costly.

Edouard Mendy joined Chelsea in the summer

Both Carragher and Neville were in agreement that Mendy is far from the finished product.

The former admits he initially felt Mendy was the answer to Chelsea’s goalkeeping woes. However, given his recent struggles, Carragher has grown more sceptical.

“He came in and made a massive difference, but I think any keeper coming in would’ve made a massive difference.”

He believes Mendy will be more under the scanner now and will need to cut out on making errors.

“I think he’s made a really good start, there’s no doubt he’s made a few mistakes of late, but all eyes will be on him now a lot more.”

Neville too has expressed his doubts regarding Mendy. The ex-Man United skipper believes that the Chelsea goalkeeper, while impressive, did not have much to worry about in his opening matches.

He is now keen to see how the Senegalese star will respond given his recent errors.

“What we’ve seen now in the last few games is mistakes starting to build.”

Mendy, meanwhile, went on to keep another clean sheet against West Ham United last night. While he was not called upon to do much, having managed a shutout could do wonders to his confidence.

Goalkeepers are usually judged on harsher parameters compared to outfield players. Mendy has so far been a hit rather than a miss. Hopefully, he will go on to prove the doubters wrong.
