According to Amazon Prime Video (h/t Football.london), Chelsea star Ben Chilwell believes there was a marked improvement in the team’s attitude at Aston Villa in comparison to that at Arsenal.
The Blues fell to a third defeat in four games at the Emirates at the weekend. The loss to Arsenal wasn’t just about the result but also the lack of ambition shown by the players that night.
While the game at Villa ended in a draw, Chilwell believes the attitude was much more promising.
Chilwell was just one of the five players who was kept in the starting line-up as Frank Lampard rung in the changes. Coming just 48 hours after the defeat against Arsenal, the draw at Villa can be used as a springboard for better results.
“The mentality was the main thing that we wanted from today and that was better.”
Playing at home, Chelsea should have been expected to net all three points. While we certainly did enough on the field to deserve that, the end product was lacking.
“It’s disappointing, but we need to look at the positives – like 48 hours after a poor performance, we’ve played well and showed good character.”
Given the poor December we have had, a welcome change of attitude is the right tone to end the year with. While we are yet to concede space in the title race, the fact that the team can bounce back from poor results shows mental fortitude.
Chelsea are still a team in their rebuilding stage and mental toughness is equally important as physical prowess on the field. Hopefully, we are taking the right steps to achieve just that.
The Blues are scheduled to play Manchester City this Sunday. However, given the Covid outbreak within their squad, it remains to be seen if the game will go ahead.
