Tottenham Hotspur unlikely to return for Chelsea star Antonio Rudiger in January

According to Football Insider (h/t Football.london), Tottenham Hotspur are unlikely to bid for Chelsea star Antonio Rudiger in January.

The German ace looked to be on his way out this summer after the Blues signed Thiago Silva. Despite interest from a number of clubs including Spurs, he stayed put.

A major factor for Spurs backing out in the summer was Chelsea’s demands for the player’s services.

According to the report, Chelsea were seeking a multi-million-pound loan fee, as well as Tottenham having to pay 100% of Rudiger’s salary during his time in North London.

Jose Mourinho’s side were unhappy with the demands and backed out. They eventually signed Swansea City star Joe Rodon on deadline day. Having already met their need for a centre-back, it remains to be seen if they will change their mind come January.

Rudiger to his credit, was ready to fight for his place rather than sulk about due to his diminished status.

It was reported recently that Frank Lampard had a heart to heart conversation with the player and decided to bring him back into the first-team fold.

This saw him make the bench against Sevilla. This was the first time the player was included in the matchday squad since our season opener at Brighton.

Rudiger would go on to make his season debut at Krasnodar in the next few days. The German has since only made a substitute appearance against Rennes. However, a return to the matchday squad is progress.

The Blues have enjoyed somewhat of a renaissance in defence in recent weeks. Edouard Mendy has come in and helped galvanize what was a free for all buffet for the opposition attackers.

Whether Rudiger is set to play a part for us in the coming months remains to be seen.
