Frank Lampard believes Harry Kane and Son Heung-min will break his and Drogba’s Premier League record

Speaking in the pre-match press conference (h/t Metro) before the derby against Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea boss Frank Lampard admitted that it is only a matter of time before Son Heung-min and Harry Kane break his Premier League record.

Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard formed a formidable partnership when the two shared the pitch for 8 years during their time at Chelsea. The two combined to score 36 goals between them in the Premier League.

Tottenham duo Harry Kane and Son Heung-min have offered a serious challenge to that record after drawing level with Manchester duo Sergio Aguero and David Silva, and Arsenal’s pairing of Robert Pires and Thierry Henry.

The two have now combined for 29 league goals amongst themselves since the start of the 2015/16 season. With Harry Kane just 27 years old and Son Heung-min only 28, the two have plenty of time to overtake that record, and Frank Lampard is aware of that.

“They are certainly a threat to that record. They are going to beat that comfortably, with the way they’re going. Fair play, I’ve got no qualms about that. It’s something me and Didier were proud of but this is football and it moves on. Players of that level will always test that. You look at the numbers they’re producing, the link-up play, the understanding is clear.”

The Spurs pair has scored a combined 24 goals in all competitions this season, and Lampard says that he is mindful of the menace they could cause to the Blues’ defence.

“It’s something we have to be aware of. It’s a big strength of theirs but it’s not their only strength, they’re a strong team around that in lots of different areas but we also have to try and nullify those threats and make the most of our strengths.”

The Blues boss also unveiled that he would be happy if his own players could develop a similar relationship as that of Kane and Son. (h/t Metro)

“With players like Son and Kane, they’ve worked on that relationship for a good few years now. We’re in the early stages of that so yes I would love for our players to get those relationships and have that level of talent.”

Chelsea lie third in the table and take on Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham Hotspur this weekend. Chelsea will have Kai Havertz and Christian Pulisic back from injury and available for selection for the match.
