According to ESPN, Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has revealed that the club is still looking to ways to improve the injury record of Christian Pulisic.
The American international has been ruled out for this weekend’s fixture against Newcastle United with a hamstring injury. Pulisic has so far made just five appearances this season, three of which came as a starter. (h/t Transfermarkt)
The 22-year-old was arguably our best attacker last season. Despite the talent brought in this summer, the young winger has it in his locker to be our most lethal forward player.
“With Christian, we are still searching [for an answer].”
However, the major issue continues to be the club’s ability to keep him fit. Pulisic has made 39 appearances for us so far scoring 12 goals and assisting 10 more. (h/t Transfermarkt)
Tomorrow’s absence at St. James’ Park will be his 26th game missed since joining the club in the summer of 2019. From what Lampard says, the club is keen to address it.
“We need to try and find the right balance between playing, resting and maintenance during the week to try and get the best out of him.”
It was originally revealed by the Chelsea boss in September that the club is looking to devise a more tailored training program to ensure he avoids a repeat of the persistent injuries he sustained at Borussia Dortmund.
We are now two months on and Pulisic has spent more time off the field than on it. Lampard admitted that Pulisic arrived at the club with an issue, but we will need to address it soon or risk his absence become the norm.
“I think Christian had an issue before coming to us, some muscular injuries. He’s had them again.”
Lampard revealed recently that he plans to use Thiago Silva judiciously given his age. It would appear that we also need to do the same with Pulisic.
Hopefully, we can find a solution soon. It would be a shame to see such a talented player miss out on so much even before he reaches his prime.
